principles of mastermind

Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich and other classics, said, “No mind is complete by itself. It needs contact and association with other minds to grow and expand.” Putting multiple minds together, you can create a mastermind group and create something which is more powerful than the sum of those individual minds.

While it is true that many business owners and entrepreneurs use “mastermind” groups to connect with like-minded individuals, share tips and tricks, and grow together, I believe true life mastery comes from WITHIN. Every person has a potential which can be tapped, unlocked and used to obtain results beyond our wildest dreams.

Each one of us has the ability to put in time and effort to become the master of our own lives and pursue happiness – however happiness is defined. While a support group helps, there’s a thriving soul and spirit which is more powerful and potent inside of us than anyone else can influence or control.

Through working on yourself each and every day, and looking to become just a little better than yesterday, consistent daily efforts will result in massive success – and this has nothing to do with anyone else. It only has to do with yourself and what’s inside of you: someone unique, amazing, and strong.

What does it mean to become a Mastermind?

principles of mastermindOver the past year now, when I’ve interacted with various readers, I’ve been called a “mastermind”, “the mastermind”, and a slew of other things which imply that I’m smart.

As you’ll soon find out, one of the principles of becoming a mastermind is the realization that I am not smarter than you or anyone else in this world.

All of us has a powerful brain which can be used to better your situation. All of us are unique and have different talents. You have the power and resources to improve your situation if you want.

What does it mean to become a mastermind?

At a high level, becoming a mastermind is pursuing overall mastery in many areas of life.

At a lower level, there are many pieces to this pursuit which are necessary to think about on the way through life.

Principles of Becoming a Mastermind

Below, I’ve compiled a list of principles which I look to write about and share with you on this blog, and also have looked to implement in my life to be a little better than the day before.

One caveat, with many things I write about on this blog, I look to present you with options and tools which can improve your life. If you don’t agree with my view on life, that’s fine – no love lost 🙂 Thinking critically and looking to assess if new information is valuable in your life is one of the principles 🙂

  • Critical thinking and being willing to think hard about different scenarios and strategies is very more important than any result
  • Understanding I’m no smarter than you or anyone else in the world
  • Realizing nearly everything can change and nothing is certain
  • Living with an abundance mindset will lead to achieving your wildest dreams
  • Wealth is not the goal, but a by-product of providing immense value over time
  • Do a little bit each day to get a little closer to you goals
  • Seek the truth, uphold the truth, but recognize that your opinions can and will change over time
  • Happiness comes from doing what you want with your life and spending your time the way you want
  • No one is the same as you, and there’s a learning opportunity with every new interaction
  • Accomplishments should be celebrated and thanks should be given to where you came from
  • Removing noise is essential for success
  • Understand things take time and will generally take longer than you think

Below, I dive into each of these individually for further explanation.

how to become patientCritical thinking and being willing to think hard about different scenarios and strategies is way more important than any result

Why are humans superior to the common ape?

Simple: humans have a powerful brain which allows them to do think critically, employ long-term thinking to navigate this complex world.

Unfortunately, many people don’t think hard about their situation and as a result, their situations don’t change.

Thinking critically and thinking hard takes a lot of energy, but it’s incredibly important for intentional living and becoming who you want to be in life.

If you take nothing else away from this post, that’s fine – I believe that thinking critically is the most important principle and can lead to all of the other principles I lay out here.

Understanding I’m no smarter than you or anyone else in the world

I’ve read 100s of books, listened to hours of podcasts, implemented much of what I learned, and constantly am seeking to learn and grow my knowledge base. When I play board games, I’m very good at visualizing strategies,  implementing them and improving the odds of winning.

I could say I’m smart, but that would be ARROGANT.

Arrogance is not attractive nor productive.

Here’s my take on this:

The only thing I know is I know nothing at all.

This is a quote attributed to Socrates, and is something I look to apply in my life.

I’m going to stop short of saying that humbleness is a principle of becoming a mastermind because I believe there is a time and place for celebrating your accomplishments (whether it be in a private or public setting).

Everyone has different talents and levels of knowledge.

Just because you share a different view, which may be more or less informed than my view, this does not mean that you are smarter or less smart then me. All it means is I need to learn more, and there’s a learning opportunity, or vice versa.

Realizing nearly everything can change and nothing is certain

My education is in mathematics and in the past, I’ve been employed as a statistician.

Math is one of the only subjects where things are absolute (there are caveats here, but let’s agree 1 and 1 is 2, 2 and 2 is 4, etc.).

When looking at data, human nature, politics, economies, almost anything, all of these things have variation and unexplainable change.

If you have more than 1 data point, in statistics, you need to introduce confidence intervals and talk about ranges of an outcome.

Want to hear a joke?

Why were economists created?

To make weathermen look smart.

The world is incredibly complex and ever changing. You have 7,000,000,000 people walking around and 7,000,000,000 motives.

This ties in with the previous principle. To think that things are static and absolute is short sighted.

I’m not smarter than the world or the universe; I’m just a speck who is looking to understand more and will probably never know anything.

Related to this principle is not taking yourself or work too seriously and having fun with life.

Living with an abundance mindset will lead to achieving your wildest dreams

I’ve talked about having an abundance mindset before on this blog.

What is an abundance mindset?

Put simply, it’s a mindset where you can win and I can win.

Living with an abundance mindset is viewing the world as a beautiful place with endless opportunity.

We both can have a favorable result from our interactions.

You can have anything you want – but it will take time and effort to get there.

Wealth is not the ultimate goal, but a by-product of providing immense value over time

I talk a lot about personal finance on this blog and one of my goals is to become financially free at a young age, but I don’t have a “number” and I don’t care about early retirement.

Personally, I think the concepts of personal finance are boring. The reason I talk about it though is because it’s important and something I realize many other people struggle with.

Money doesn’t really matter to me because just having money is not fulfilling. Money is a tool to do what you want with your time and money.

Honestly, I want to have millions of dollars in the bank someday. I don’t want to put a number on it, because that would put an artificial cap on my sights. $10 million? Why not $100 million? Why not a billion?

With an abundance mindset, all of these are possibilities.

Here’s the thing though, wealth does not come easy.

Wealth comes from providing immense value over time.

How do I provide value? How do I solve other people’s problems?

Answering these questions will lead to the answers of becoming wealthy.

Do a little bit every day that will push you a little bit closer to your goals

Overnight successes are 5 to 10 years in the making.

Success comes from simple daily disciplines added up over many days, weeks, months, and years.

In personal finance, this concept connects to the concept of compound interest.

Very few people can go from no wealth to becoming a millionaire overnight.

But, by being consistent and saving money each and every month and year, you will start to accumulate more and more money.

compound interest investing example

It’s the exact same thing with your goals. Take a step each and every day to become just a little bit better than yesterday.

Seek the truth, uphold the truth, but recognize that your opinions can and will change over time

This principle follows from the principle that I’m not smarter than anyone else and because of this student mindset, I need to be open to incorporating new information into my worldview.

While navigating this complex world, there are learning opportunities in every place you look.

I want to know the truth and I want to make sure that this truth is the REAL truth – not some phony infomercial truth.

That being said, because I know I’m not smarter than anyone else, I’m able to be fluid in my thoughts and understand that I’m not always right.

I’m not an expert in everything and many things are not certain and static.

Recognizing things can change and will change will set you free.

Happiness comes from doing what you want with your life and spending your time the way you want

When are you enjoying life? What are you doing? Who are you with? Why do you feel this way?

Happiness in life comes in many different flavors and varieties.

I believe happiness comes from doing what you want with you life.

What makes you happiest? Are there things you are doing in your life you love doing? How can you do more of that and less of the things you aren’t doing?

Ultimately, you are the creator of your life and can do anything you want with your time and energy.

The pursuit of life mastery involves taking your current situation and making tweaks over time to better it.

It might not change over night, but can change over time.

No one is the same as you, and there’s a learning opportunity with every new interaction

We are different and because of this, there is an opportunity to learn and grow from each other.

It is arrogant to think just because I’m more well read or have certain experiences that I’m better, smarter or more whatever than someone else when I have no idea what they’ve been through or what they have seen in their lives.

In reality, having an open mind will allow you to learn more and grow to become better, rather than having a closed mind.

financial decision makingAccomplishments should be celebrated and thanks should be given to where you came from

Did you just get a promotion at work? Did you recently have a big win? What about just a small win?

Yes? Do a little dance then!

There’s no reason not to celebrate your wins.

Wins are a great time to reflect on how you got to that point, give thanks to your supporters, and start to plan for the future.

For a happy life, balance is necessary:

  • balance between fun and play
  • balance between consumption and creation
  • and balance between celebration and struggle

Removing noise is essential for success

Social media, the news, and things that don’t matter are not important to your purpose and life.

Over the last few years, I’ve looked to reduce and remove noise from my life and it’s been incredibly beneficial for my productivity.

With so many people and companies looking to grab our attention, it’s tough to stay away from that new shiny app or toy.

Many of these new shiny things aren’t worth it though and won’t lead to happiness in the long run.

Noise gets in the way of our goals, purpose, and actions.

Take time to understand the noise in your life and make moves to reduce it over time.

Understand things take time and will generally take longer than you think

All things take time. We need to be patient while continuing to do a little bit each and every day to become better.

No one is an overnight success as I mentioned in one of the previous principles, but that success will come eventually through disciplined action taking and consistent efforts.

By understanding that things take time, we can stay patient and grow over time towards our goals.

This is just one way, you are the creator of  your life and need to think for yourself

As I mentioned above, thinking critically and figuring out what is most important for you and your situation is incredibly important for success.

Listening to supposed “gurus” or “experts” can help inform you of your situation, but ultimately, you need to implement what feels right for you.

I talked about this above, I’m not some genius mastermind that you might think – I’m still on my way to life mastery, financial freedom, understanding more about this world, and finding the truth to further improve my situation. All I can do is just that; working a little bit more each day to become a little bit better.

You have the ability to do whatever you want in your life.

You are the CREATOR of your life.

Go and get it.

applying the concept of compound interest

Would you rather have a million dollars today or a penny which doubles each day for 30 days?Compound interest is alive and well in all areas of life.

One of my core philosophies in life is performing simple daily actions and disciplines each and every day to get a little bit closer to my goals. I know I’m not going to reach my goals today, next week, or the week after.

BUT over time, maybe a few months, or a few years later, I’ll get there and accomplish more than I could have ever imagined.

In this post, I will be touching on the most important concept of personal finance, compounding interest.

compound interest

What is Compound Interest?

Compound interest is essentially “interest on your interest“, or put another way, growth on your investment taking into consideration the previous growth on that same investment.

One of the simplest examples of compound interest is the following: would you rather receive $1 million dollars today, or would you rather take a penny, but double it every day for a month?

The first day, you have 2 cents, the second day, you have 4 cents, the third day, you have 8 cents… two weeks in, you have $81.92. Well, guess what? At the end of the month, you end up with over $10 million dollars.

You only started off with a penny, what happened? That’s the power of time and compounding.

Yes, you started off with a small amount, and for a long time, you didn’t have much, but 30 days later, boom, $10 million bucks – much more than $1 million!!!

Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it … he who doesn’t … pays it.” – Albert Einstein

A Real World Example of Compound Interest

In the world of personal finance, there are a few ways compound interest can affect you, but I’ll focus on two: your investments and your debt.

How Compound Interest Affects Your Investments

Let’s say that you’ve invested in an asset which returns, on average, 7% each year, and let’s say you invest $10,000 the first year.

After one year, you have $10,000 of your original investment, and $700 of growth.

While yes, $700 would be great to take out and spend, you decide to leave it in because now, that $700 is going to grow at 7% in addition to the rest of your $10,000 original investment.

After the second year, you now have $11,449 ($10,000 + $700 + $700 + $700 * 7%)

Again, you decide to leave it in, since now, both $700s are going to grow in addition to your original investment.

Over 30 years, the growth is quite large: your original $10,000 investment is worth $76,123!

After 1 year, you barely had anything more than your original investment. But after 30 years, you had over 7 times your initial investment! That’s the power of compounding.

How Compound Interest Affects Your Debt

Let’s say you’ve taken on some debt.

Now, instead of growing an investment, you are paying interest down on your loan from the bank or some other institution.

I created an example where the user had 2 credit cards, a mortgage, an auto loan, and a student loan totaling $246,500.

  • Credit card #1 has a balance $3,500 and an interest rate of 23.49%
  • Credit card #2 has a balance $10,000 and an interest rate of 20.19%
  • The mortgage has a balance $200,000 and an interest rate of 4.00%
  • The auto loan has a balance $8,000 and an interest rate of 5.00%
  • The student loan has a balance $25,000 and an interest rate of 7.00%

By paying an extra $25 a month and applying a debt pay down method, in this example, there is potential savings of at least $49,915!

debt paydown faster

How is this savings achieved?

By adding a little bit extra each month to your scheduled debt payment, you can let compounding take over and speed up the time it will take your debt to be eliminated.

Compound interest can work for you OR against you. Which are you going to choose?

Applying the Concept of Compound Interest in Your Life

On The Mastermind Within, while personal finance is one of my focuses, another focus is self improvement and personal development.

As I mentioned in the intro, one of my core philosophies is applying compounding in many areas of my life.

Growth is NEVER linear.

In a world filled with instant coffee, instant breakfast, instant credit, instant shopping, instant information, and 24/7 news, we have come dangerously close to losing touch with reality and believing we have access to instant life. But life is not a clickable link.

Starting out in any area you want to become better in, growth is incredibly slow.

Think back to a time you were a beginner in something you wanted to become better at.

I love the example of when I started working out: I was weak and barely could do a few push-ups.

The next time I worked out, I could only do 1 more push-up, but it was progress. The next time, I could do 2 sets of 5. After a few sessions of working out, I was up to 3 sets of 8.

After a few years of working out, 30 push-ups in a row isn’t out of the question. What started with less than 5 push ups in a row turned into many.

It’s the same concept in life in whatever you want: personal finance, education, health, etc.

Become Financially Successful, One Month at a Time

On this blog, I have a bunch of others articles on the subject of personal finance. These personal finance articles will help you become better financially. Here is a list of all of the posts:

I’ll be frank: you aren’t going to get rich just by reading what I’ve wrote, and saving $100 this month.

You probably aren’t going to get rich saving $100 each month this year.

BUT, save $100 a month for 10, 20 or 30 years? You’ll be wealthy.

Paying an extra $100 on your mortgage for 10 or 20 years? You’ll be debt free.

Saving $10,000 a year for 10, 20, or 30 years? Hello Double Comma Club! (1,000,000 has 2 commas 😉 )

Make the simple decision to build wealth today, and I know with consistent efforts over time, you will be a huge success.

Concluding Thoughts on Applying the Concept of Compound Interest

Remember: simple daily actions and disciplines WILL add up to massive results over time.

Doing something once won’t be enough.

Doing something twice isn’t either.

Performing something daily for weeks and months? I know you’ll get there.

finding balance

Having balance in life is very important. Working too much and always being on the go can be detrimental for you. Likewise, being lazy and ignoring responsibility can make it hard to achieve your goals. In this article on living a balanced lifestyle, you’ll learn about 8 tips you can apply to live a balanced life and how to find the right balance in life.

Becoming better as a person, or becoming better in a certain interest can be overwhelming. Balancing new information, past experiences, and the rest of your life can be difficult.

Balance is something I think about most these days when looking to live a fulfilling life.

Being balanced in life can help solve so many problems.

I ask myself, “am I in balance or do I need to reassess where I’m at in my life? Do I need to take a break, or should I push through?”

How to live a balanced life and how to find the right balance in life is hard, but can be done with the right guidance and patience.

What I’ve learned is balance is incredibly important in life, and in this post, I’ll be sharing with you why balance is so important, how to find the right balance in life, and 8 tips you can use to create more balance in your life.

Finding The Right Balance is Very Important for Success

Balance is one of the most important things to create in your life. This may be obvious, but having the right balance is very hard to do in practice.

For example, too much work will result in becoming burnt out.

Too much play will result in no work getting done.

Spending too much time with friends could lead to a lack of identity.

Spending too much time alone could lead to loneliness and one way of thought.

Too much sleep can lead to a number of health issues.

Too little sleep and your energy and work will suffer from lack of clarity and focus.

Doing too much exercise will lead to overuse injuries, and sitting on the couch all day will lead to small muscles and droopy skin.

You probably know the saying, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing? Well that’s what we are talking about here 🙂

Balance is key and important in life because with many things, being extreme is typically a detriment to living our lives the right way.

Many of these things we know, but don’t take action to find the right balance.

balance in lifeThe Many Areas Where Balance Can Be Ruined

While it might be impossible to be completely balanced in life, there are many areas, some of which we’ve touched on earlier, where balance could be ruined.

Being completely balanced in life is almost impossible, but these areas can give us a better picture of what to focus on if we want to find balance in life.

The areas where you need to focus on balance the most are the following:

  • Being Out of Balance at Work
    • Getting yelled at by your boss, working 80 hour weeks, or not having work at all might not be the best for your long term well being.
    • Balance at work is having time for development, some busy times, some fun times, and opportunities to do what you want with your time (as ultimately, you spend more hours at your job than you probably do anything else other than sleep!)
  • Being Out of Balance in Our Sleep
    • Always being tired, because you go to bed too late, or sleeping in every day might not be optimal. Over time, over and under sleeping can take a toll on your body and mind.
    • While on the weekends, it is nice to sleep in once and a while, doing so every day can affect your focus and productivity.
    • Likewise, too little sleep, and you really will be dragging!
  • Being Out of Balance in Our Health and Exercise
    • This might be an obvious one: sit on the couch all day, and you’ll quickly find yourself out of shape. Work out all day, and you may get injured from overuse.
    • A balance between activity and rest will lead to a healthy lifestyle.
  • Being Out of Balance in Our Eating Habits
    • Another seemingly obvious one: eat only junk food, and you’ll get a stomach ache. Eat too much, and you’ll start to put on pounds. Eat too little, and you’ll lose muscle. What about too healthy? Eating too healthy… well, some things can be good in moderation!
  • Being Out of Balance in Our Relationships
    • Sometimes it’s great to see your friends, and sometimes to great to be alone.
    • If you are with your friends all the time, work and responsibility will be put aside.
    • If you spend a lot of time alone, sometimes that will keep you narrow minded and not in touch with reality. There’s a lot of world to see out there people!

Like I said above, there are many things in life we need to balance, and this is just the start to finding the right balance for a great life.

Finding balance is an exercise in self-awareness and knowing where you are in life.

I’m going to share with you where I am in my life with my thoughts and actions, and then will talk about the tips for you to find balance in life.

finding balance

Finding Balance and Trying to Live a Balanced Life

Over the past few years, I’ve been trying to find balance in my life in my work, my play, my exercise, my diet, my sleep, and my hustles.

Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about balance in my work and play, and also in my sleep.

I’m pretty busy, with a few side hustles, and a day job.

During this past winter, I got into a habit of going to bed between 11:30 and 1, and getting up at 8 am, right before scrambling off to work. With the usual winter morning darkness, I struggled to wake up at any time earlier than 7 (even if I went to bed early), and decided that it would be better for me to stay up later and sleep in.

Now, I’m finding that with the sun coming in at 5 am, I’m able to wake up if I need to, and also sleep in if I please.

Some days, if I’m really busy, I’ll get up at 5 am. Other days, if I’m tired, I’ll sleep in and get up around 7:30 or 8. I’ve found a balance between more sleep and less sleep.

Similarly, I’ve found a balance in my diet and exercise, where I eat well most of the time, and exercise a few times a week. With this, I’ve stayed relatively in shape, and am still able to play pick-up sports and not be too tired.

I’m sure you have some of the same thoughts about activities in your life.

You want to become a Rich? Drop the 9 to 5 and Start Working 95

About a year ago, I came across an interesting article talking about Grant Cardone, a super salesman, entrepreneur, and millionaire. In the article, he says, “Most people work 9 to 5. I work 95 hours (per week). If you ever want to be a millionaire, you need to stop doing the 9 to 5 and start doing 95.”

This quote has stuck with me ever since, if wealth accumulation is my goal, then it’s crucial for me to start putting in more and more hours to get to this goal.

I want to become financially independent. At the end of the day, ultimate failure to me is not being able to support myself and my family.

If I could have 1 thing in life, the ability to provide for my family is the only thing I could ever ask for.

As my wealth and abilities grow, my tune has started to change. I feel very confident I can become rich without sacrificing as much in the short term.

I can sleep 8 hours, exercise, see friends, and still reach my goals.

My mindset towards grinding has changed through reflection and reading.

My friend Matt, the founder of Optimize Your Life, talks a lot about finding balance in life. Matt says,

“If we want both success and happiness, we need to make sure to give attention to all of the different areas of our lives. We cannot ignore our marriage to further our career success. We cannot ignore our health to have more time for our relationships. Ignoring our finances to further our friendships will not lead to success.”

I’m trying to find balance in my life right now. I have my goals and my purpose. There’s so much I want to experience, to learn, and to do.

At the same time though, I need to be cognizant of what is also important to me: my relationships, my health, and my finances.

Now, I want to discuss an interesting topic: the pressure of expectations.

How to Deal with Expectations When Trying to Find Balance

In a number of conversations I’ve been having with friends about their thoughts on their goals, I’ve been bringing up balance and trying to discuss the expectations around the situation.

When I set out to do something, a lot of it is from within and what I want to do with my life. Maybe I’m a little bit of a rebel, but these days I try to stay grounded and not influenced by outside opinions or expectations.

I stand up for what I believe in, and stand down for things I need more information on.

With some of the struggles of balance I’ve been learning about with others around me, I try to understand a little more and ask if the struggles are coming from the inside or outside.

Are you driven from within to go and accomplish your goals, OR are you driven to accomplish your goals because you are trying to impress others and make other people happy?

I’ve found that rarely will looking to impress others leads to a happy and fulfilling life.

At the same time though, at work, there are tasks I have to get done for others and I’ll do those happily because my paycheck helps me achieve my financial goals.

After figuring out if the pressure is internal or external, you can start to go down the question rabbit hole.

If the pressures are external, is there anything you can change about the situation to reduce this pressure? Could you change jobs? Change scenery? Is the community you are surrounding yourself with the right community?

If the pressures are internal, why are you expecting so much out of yourself? Could you do more? Are your priorities in the right place? Are there things you could be doing which would allow you to work smarter, not harder?

Starting with this question can help with the question of how to balance your life to better align your actions with a less stressful and more fulfilling experience.

Now, let’s get into the tips for creating balance and living a balanced life.

8 Ways You Can Find Balance in your Work and Leisure

Are you looking for more balance in your life? Are you looking for the right balance for happiness and success in your life?

Here are 8 steps you can take to live a more balanced life and to find balance in your life:

  1. Breathe and relax
  2. Figure out what’s important to you
  3. Take actions to reduce noise in your life
  4. Become more self-aware and understand yourself
  5. Understand the purpose of setting goals
  6. Let things go
  7. Understand progress takes time and it’s okay to take breaks
  8. Live life at your own pace and adjust over time

Let’s dive into each of these 8 balanced living tips below.

1. Take a deep breath

First, take a deep breath and collect yourself. Everyone gets stressed out from time to time, and that’s okay.

Breathing allows you to slow down, get your bearings, and relax.

Your brain needs air to think and process information! Give your brain what it needs! 🙂

By relaxing, breathing and slowing down, you can then start to think rationally and game plan to achieve the balance in your life that you want.

simplify life2. Figure out what’s important to you

Next, it’s important to figure out what matters to you, and to assess where you are in your life right now.

What’s causing the imbalance in your life right now? What would your life look like if you were in balance? How would you feel?

Figuring out what is important to you and aligning your actions with your goals and wants is something I think is a necessary ingredient to happiness and fulfillment.

3. Take Actions to Reduce Noise in Your Life

Many times when we get out of balance, it’s because we have taken on too many things with work, at home, or with friends.

Reducing noise can help you focus and allow you to not be distracted or overwhelmed with negativity and stress.

For me, I’ve removed noise by not watching the news or TV, by unsubscribing to marketing emails, and through spending time only on things I want to do.

What makes you happiest? How are you spending your time? Is your time being spent in a way which brings you happiness, or is it being blocked by other things in your life?

By reducing noise, you can start to do more of the things you like, and spend less time on the things you don’t like.

4. Become More Self Aware will Lead to What You Want in Life

After you’ve taken a deep breath, reduced noise, and came up with a thought for what you want in life, now it’s time to make some adjustments.

Self awareness, maturity, emotional intelligence – all of these things develop over time and have been a constant struggle for me.

There are times where I get wrapped up in a conversation and all of a sudden, I lose focus for a second and get annoyed by some minor comment or action. I’m sure there have been times where you’ve had a similar experience.

It’s tough to always be on and present in the moment but can be worked on.

Similarly, I’ve had experiences where I’m so focused on getting my work done and I lose track of time. All of a sudden, an hour later, I notice I’ve been sitting for a few hours straight – something not good for my health.

Or if I’m exhausted and keep pushing. It’s okay to take a break and sometimes very necessary! There’s no point in pushing through exhaustion if it will lead to a cold or the flu.

If the people around you can’t handle you taking a break when necessary, then maybe it’s time to surround yourself with other people (people with demanding and unrelenting bosses, I’m looking at you 😉 )

My point with this post is to focus again on that it’s okay to relax and have a break from the grind. Of course, action is important, but again, balance is what will lead to great success.

5. Understand the Purpose of Goals

I want success in my career and finances at a relatively younger age, and through these overarching thought, I’m someone with a lot of goals and ambition.

Some of my goals are a little over the top, and if I don’t hit one, sometimes I feel down.

That being said, here’s the thing: life happens. It’s okay if I miss a goal, or a sub-goal.

Goals are so incredibly essential for someone who wants success.

One of my main mantras and principles which I live my life by is “simple daily actions and disciplines WILL result in massive success over time”.

Do some sort of exercise each day and I’ll be fit.

Read each day and I’ll grow my knowledge base.

With this philosophy in hand, ideas become actions. Actions become habits. Habits become my or your life.

At the same time, it’s okay to take a break if you need it.

Going 100 miles an hour to get to some arbitrary mark or goal might not be the most beneficial or sustainable if it’s going to rob you of your energy, time, health, relationships, or focus.

It’s okay to take a break. It’s okay to not always be on with your A game.

6. Let The Little Things Go

Speaking a little more generally here, it’s okay to not always be on in terms of personality, exercise, relationships, money or work.

One of the keys to my success has been the ability to let things go and move on to other things that matter.

Some people might call this apathy, but the ability to simply shrug things off is a great ability to have.

There are so many triggers out there waiting to get you… social media notifications, controversial news headlines, an accidental bump by a passing stranger…

The other week after work, I was walking to my bus. To my left, there was the patio of a bar downtown and to the right, the tall office building.

Up ahead, I saw a guy walking and talking on his phone. The interesting part here was he was talking on his phone and walking backwards on a busy sidewalk.

As we got closer, I was minding my own business just going to my bus. We ended up bumping shoulders a little bit because the sidewalk was tight.

After a few seconds, I was crossing the street with a bunch of other downtown walkers and I hear, “Hey! Watch where you are f***ing going you b****!”

I could have turned around and yelled back. Maybe I should’ve said something first.

I just kept walking and didn’t let it bother me. It was after work, I just wanted to get home safe, and if someone bumps into me on accident, I’m not going to get worked up over it.

While obviously that guy should’ve been watching where he was going, accidents happen. Recognizing accidents or random meaningless things are happening to you and being able to move on is a great skill to have.

There are many things we can’t control in life, but also many things we can control.

7. Understand Progress and Finding Balance Takes Time

Nobody is an overnight success.

Things take time to develop and take shape.

Working through the struggle and working towards balance will take time, but it definitely will be worth it 🙂

As I’ve looked to simplify my life a little more, I had a thought which I’m going to share with you now: you can take a break if you need one.

There’s a quote I’m sure you know: Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Your six-pack and dream body is not going to get created from 100 push-ups done 1 day.

You probably aren’t going to become a millionaire in the next month.

Just by mindset, you might not be able to overcome your fear of public speaking.

However, do 100 push-ups for 30 days in a row, and you’ll see progress. Save and invest $500 a month for 20 years, and you’ll be close to a million dollars. Practicing your public speaking over time will lead to more confidence.

Things take time, and being patient will lead to you feeling good about your progress.

8. Live Life at Your Own Pace

Finally, it’s important to live life at your own pace if you want a balanced life.

When looking out into the world, it seems that everyone is going one million miles an hour and you need to do the same.

Even though I’m someone who prefers taking action and getting out into the world, first, it’s important to start by asking and understanding what YOU love doing and what will bring YOU joy.

You and I only have one life (as cliche as that is, it’s true).

The key to balance is living life at your own pace.

Figuring out that pace might be a little bit rough at first, but it will be worth it for living a fulfilling life.

There is absolutely NO reason why this should make you feel like you should live at a faster pace (if that’s what you want).

If you want to take it easy on a weekend, do it! Splurge on that ice cream shop down the street! Do what’s necessary to keep you sane and happy!

At the same time, if you are goal driven and want to live intentionally, then it’s important to get back to work after you’ve had your fun.

Balance is so critical in life for leading a fulfilling and happy life. Balance in all areas (relationships, work, money, stress, etc.) can be managed, but will require you to turn inward and seek the truth from within your powerful mind and spirit.

What’s important? What isn’t important? What makes you happiest?

Balance has been on my mind and will continue to be on my mind. I’ll figure it out and I hope you will too.

While you can be successful without balance, it will be very tough to sustain that success as a large wind can blow you off the balance beam at any time.

Figure out what’s important to you and look to find balance between work and play, friends and alone time, creation and consumption, healthy food, exercise, and junk food.

Find Balance in Life and Live a Fulfilling and Great Life

Now, it’s time to take actions to figure out what’s important to you and how you can reduce the noise of what’s bothering you to let the signal come through.

Take a deep breath and collect yourself. Everyone gets stressed out in life from time to time (and that’s okay).

What’s causing the imbalance in your life right now? What would your life look like if you were in balance? How would you feel?

Many times when we get out of balance, it’s because we have taken on too many things with work, at home, or with friends.

Out of these things, what’s important? Is there anything you could remove to get back your time and energy for what matters?

After reducing the noise in your life, think back to what what’s most important to you and your life. Focus in on what makes you happiest, and you’ll start getting back into balance.

Unfortunately, this process may take a few weeks.

Rarely will things happen overnight.

Maturity and patience is required here as things take time to develop and take shape. Working through the struggle will be worth it though 🙂

Readers: how do you keep balance in your life? How do you decompress? Do you find there needs to be a balance between work and play, friends time and alone time, and creation vs. consumption?

Living A Balanced Life
Living A Balanced Life

Are you looking to become great and successful, or are you happy if you can have just enough?

Do you want to be the best you can be, or is settling for average good enough?

Are you happy with where you are in life, or do you want more?

Over the past year, it’s been tough – obviously we’ve all had to make changes and reassess our lives with the many changes in the way we do our work, travel, spend time with friends and family, and do things on a daily basis.

With this, I know I’ve lost a little bit of the fire in my belly to keep striving and working each day, however, recently, with Spring just around the corner, I have a new desire and new motivation to get back to the grind.

A few weeks ago, I was reading a book about mindset, and one of the quotes that stuck with me was the following:

People by and large become what they think of themselves.

If you believe in yourself and believe that you can do amazing things, you have a better chance at doing just that.

You can do anything you put your mind to.

However, if you believe that you are average, or you are comfortable with where you are in life and don’t need to make a change, then nothing will change.

Over the past few weeks, since reading this book, I’ve assessing everything I do through this new lens.

By believing I’m more, and expecting more, I can become more.

By demanding excellence in my day to day life, I can become great.

Let’s dive more into how you can demand excellence in your life, and get on to living the life you want and deserve.

Consistent Actions WILL Lead to Great Success Over Time

To achieve success in anything you do, you need to break it down into what actions you are going to take on a daily basis to acheive that goal.

Consistent actions added up over time will lead to success – this is one of the core beliefs that I talk about on this blog and how I live my life.

For example, let’s say you want to become fit and build your strength.

If you do 30 push-ups and 30 squats today, you’ll feel good for a little while, but tomorrrow, you’ll wake up and not see much of a change.

However, if you do 30 push-ups and 30 squats every day for a week, you will start to notice some changes in your body and your strength.

Do this for a few weeks, and even a few months, you’ll have done THOUSANDS of push-ups and squats. You will feel better about your body and you will be stronger.

What would be impossible to do in a day became easy over 6 months or a year.

That is how champions and success is made.

Intentional daily actions each day lead to success over the long term.

You can control your day to day actions and with this in mind, let’s now talk about step two in this process: demanding excellence in everything you do.

Demanding Excellence in Your Day to Day Activities

Have you ever heard of the phrase “practice makes perfect”?

What about the phrase “perfect practice makes perfect”?

Each of these phrases get to the point of how consistent actions (practice) and demanding excellence (perfect practice) can lead to success (perfection).

Demanding excellence is a mindset shift which will help you align your practice with your goals.

It’s not enough to just go through the motions and do just enough to get by – no, you need to do the right steps and adjust your strategy over time to ensure you are on the right path.

What does demanding excellence mean?

Demanding excellence means:

  • Setting big goals and having high expectations of yourself
  • Developing a daily routine which pushes your limits and expands your abilities
  • Researching and problem solving when you get stuck
  • Staying disciplined when times get tough
  • Going the extra step to get what you want

Let’s dig a little deeper on each of these before wrapping up the article

“A person with great dreams can achieve great things.” – Bob Rotella

Demand Excellence through Setting Big Goals

What are you goals? What are you trying to accomplish? Where do you want to be in life in 1, 3 or 5 years?

Write down your answers and have them with you before we continue.

Now, take your answers and ask yourself, what would the next step above these goals look like?

What I mean, is let’s say you have a goal to get a new job that pays $75,000.

Why stop at $75,000?

What would life look like if you had a job that paid $85,000? What skills would you need to get to this level? Is there anything stopping you from getting this higher paying job?

Becoming successful is done first by setting a huge goal. If you want to shoot for the moon, then you better aim for the moon.

If you aim for less, you’ll hit less. If you expect less, you’ll get less.

Setting big goals and having high expectations for yourself will lead to helping you get on the right path mentally and physically.

Demanding Excellence in Your Daily Routine

Each day, you have an opportunity to take action towards your goals.

Each day, you can either be working towards your goals, or neglecting and moving farther away from your goals.

During each day, I’d recommend trying to do something little to help you stay on track for your goals.

Next, after establishing the routine of doing a little each day, you can start to add on more and more. Then over time, you can continue to make tweaks to make this daily routine more effective and efficient for you.

Then, as you become comfortable, demand excellence in what you do, and strive for perfection.

Demanding Excellence and Expand Your Knowledge

As you start on your journey to success, over time, you’ll come across road bumps and barriers.

The way to navigate these barriers is done through experience, knowledge and problem solving.

To gain this knowledge and experience, you need to be constantly doing, learning and experimenting.

Continual growth can only be done when you are constantly recieving more and more stimulus into your brain.

Reading books, learning a new language, starting a side hustle, or taking courses can all be beneficial for you in expanding your knowledge and capacity to do more.

Demand Excellence and Stay Disciplined

I’m not a runner, but something I’m always impressed by is when I see people running in bad weather.

Training for marathon race in bad weather has to be one of the worst experiences I can imagine. But to get to where they want to be, a runner needs to get out there, rain or shine.

Looking at the weather before the run, it could be so easy to say “I’ll do it tomorrow” or “Maybe another day”.

But to be great and demand excellence is to push through these tough times and stick to your plan.

The people who aren’t willing to grind through these tough times are the ones they will be passing during the race – so it will be worth it.

For you, doing things daily and sticking to those tasks will lead to the results you want. Stay disciplined and you’ll be on the way to excellence and success.

Demand Excellence by Going the Extra Step

Going the extra step is how successful people become successful.

Just showing up, doing the minimum, and doing what is necessary will not get you to the high level you want.

Instead, putting in a more time than is required, doing extra reps, finding efficiencies, and pushing for that little extra bit will get you on a better trajectory.

If you want to become the best in your field, get the body you want, or make more money, then you need to be willing to put in more to get more.

Think of it this way – let’s say everyone around you also wants to get to where you are going.

How can you speed up the time it takes, so that you get there first?

It’s going to be a combination of working smarter AND working harder.

Go the extra step – it’ll be worth it.

Get on the Path to Success Today

Each of these posts on mindset will help you get on the right path to living the life you want and deserve.

Whether you are just starting on the path to success, grinding each day in the middle of the journey, or almost to the end, I hope that you can benefit from the advice above.

In the coming weeks, I know that I will be demanding more and more out of myself, and I’m excited to see the results from my efforts.

It’s not enough to just go through the motions and expect things to change – we need to do a little more each day, and try to break through existing barriers to make breakthroughs.

Whatever your goal is, I know that through having higher expectations for yourself, taking steps daily, and going the extra mile will get you the results you want.

Demand excellence and get on the path to success.

Readers: what goals do you have? What are you trying to achieve this year? What are you doing daily to achieve those goals?

Are you looking for success in life? What’s holding you back? Are you holding yourself back? In this post, I’m going to share with you 9 common limiting beliefs and how to overcome those beliefs to reach your goals. Life is hard enough as it is – you don’t need to get in the way of your own progress!

One of the core principles and tenets of my values and outlook on the world is how each person has an incredibly powerful brain and mind that can do amazing things.

With your brain, you can either have it work for you, or against you, when trying to reach your goals and dream life.

You can tell yourself positive things, such as, “I can do it” or “I’m capable of anything”.

Or, you can be trapped by limiting beliefs – beliefs  which can impede our growth and actually drive our daily behavior. Even when we do not realize it, these beliefs are part of us and what we think, and have a huge impact on our lives.

In this post, I want to talk about how our belief system is formed, 10 common limiting beliefs, and how you can replace these limiting beliefs with positive beliefs on the path to achieving success in your life.

How Our Belief System is Created

When we are in our childhood, our brains are forming, constantly learning, and maturing. During this time, what we see from our environment forms our belief system – from how we view our parents and their role in our life, authority figures, friends, achievement, fun, etc.

During this time, we learn about everything from self-esteem, self-image, money, work, responsibility, fun, communication, etc.

However, the problem occurs here: when we are young, we don’t necessarily understand how to interpret what we see, and these events and experiences shape our outlook on the world.

If a teacher continually says things like, “You can’t achieve your goals because you aren’t talented enough”, this can form a limiting belief where you tell yourself you can’t achieve your goals because your teacher told you so.

I believe you can do anything you put your mind to, and if you have this limiting belief, it’s something you can change.

This limiting belief and other limiting beliefs limit us in all areas of life. These limiting beliefs lead to problems with self-esteem, confidence in ourselves, financial problems, our relationships, our work, etc.

Let’s get on to fixing these limiting beliefs so you can achieve your goals and dreams.

The rest of the post is a list of 10 common limiting beliefs and how you can replace these limiting beliefs with new beliefs which can help you achieve anything you want in life.

9 Common Limiting Beliefs Keeping You From Living Life to the Fullest

Everyday, there are a set of thoughts, ideas and beliefs which govern your behavior.

These thoughts can be leading you in the right direction, or restricting your growth and progress.

Imagine you are having thoughts like:

  • “I can’t say what I want because I’m afraid I’ll be judged.”
  • “I don’t want to give my all to my partner because I’m afraid my heart will be broken.”
  • “I’m not capable of working hard, so why try?”

With these thoughts, you are living your life in fear and limited in what you can achieve and accomplish.

These thoughts are very common and even the most successful people have these thoughts.

However, the key for success is to overcome these beliefs and move on to a new belief.

The 9 common limiting beliefs I’m going to cover are below. You can click each of the links below to go directly to a section below, or scroll to read more.

In each of these sections, you’ll learn how to use affirmations to change your mindset towards overcoming your limiting beliefs.

  1. I can’t be myself because others will judge me
  2. I can’t ask for what I want because I am afraid of being rejected
  3. I can’t love because I know I’ll be hurt me or have my heart broken
  4. I can’t trust people because they always take advantage of me or cheat on me
  5. I can’t set goals because I know I’m going to fail
  6. I always screw things up
  7. I don’t need to have more money or be successful
  8. I’m too old to chase my dreams
  9. Nobody cares what I say

Let’s dive into the details now.

1. I can’t be myself because others will judge me

I can’t be myself because others will judge me is our first common limiting belief. Maybe this belief started when you were young and rejected by a teacher or peer.

Here’s a fact: everyone is special and unique in their own way. No matter what you do, no matter what you say, no matter what you believe, others will have an opinion.

This limiting belief comes from the fear of being hurt or not being able to do our best. In reality, almost all of our limiting beliefs have a lot to do with your inner critic, since he is in charge of protecting you and stopping you so that you cannot be hurt, rejected or made you feel bad.

These type of beliefs prevent you from risking doing something you’d like to do or something that might lead you to living a more fulfilling life.

But here’s the thing: you can only control your life and so if you allow yourself to experience different things, you will get satisfaction in yourself that no one will give you.

It’s important to turn this limiting belief around and say, I can be myself because when I’m myself, I can do my best work and can open yourself up to new possibilities.

The secret here is to learn to love yourself so much that it is not necessary to depend on the opinion of other people, accept yourself so much that what others say does not collapse you.

What if you spent more time doing what you like, without fear, without prejudice, without paying attention to what other people will say? I’m guessing you would be able to live happier and with more peace.

We are all different, so the fact that we spend so much time trying to please other people is useless and cannot really be achieved.

Change this limiting belief by trying the following affirmations and thoughts:

  • “I do my best work when I embrace who I am.”
  • “I am enough.”
  • “I love myself.”

2. I can’t ask for what I want because I am afraid of being rejected

The fear of rejection is quite common and is reflected in all areas of our life.

When you want a raise in your job, when you apply for a new position, when you want to sell more of your products, when you apply for a loan, when you want to find a partner, all of these situations can be affected by this limiting belief.

How you see yourself affects your performance and what happens in each of these scenarios.

Many people fall short when it comes to selling themselves because many of us grew up with ideas that speaking well of yourself can seem selfish, boastful or rude. With this, you carry the fear of being rejected, that others will tell you that you are wrong, or simply that they will criticize you (like the previous limiting idea).

This fear can be paralyzing and prevents you from achieving what you want, and it causes you to stay living a life you don’t really like, going to a job that you hate, or not meeting more friends or a partner for fear that others won’t like you.

When you start working on yourself, accepting yourself and being compassionate with yourself, this fear of rejection begins to decrease. You must be well aware of what kind of words you say to yourself.

Change this limiting belief by trying the following affirmations and thoughts:

  • “Rejection is an integral part of life. Each no will bring me closer to a yes.”
  • “If I want to receive, I need to ask.”
  • “I am enough.”

3. I can’t love because I know I’ll be hurt me or have my heart broken

One of the worst limiting beliefs is the belief that you’ll be hurt or have your heart broken if you love.

The fear of being hurt can prevent you from meeting your partner, soul mate, and person with who you can share your life.

This belief is hard to identify because it is part of your subconscious.

However, if you are not satisfied with your personal relationships, especially your intimate relationships, then it is important to question what is causing this dissatisfaction.

Many people are not aware that our personal relationships are a reflection of the relationship we have with ourselves. The lack of confidence in yourself, the fear of being hurt, and the fear of accepting yourself completely is reflected in the way you relate to other people.

Your emotional needs guide your behavior. When you do not know your needs and values, and look for someone who will satisfy them, it is more likely that you go through life with disappointments and thinking that you cannot have stable or healthy relationships.

It is important to remember that no one can satisfy your emotional needs, only you can. When you focus on getting to know them, then you will be open and ready to have healthy, stable love relationships that you really enjoy.

You are a whole person and you do not need anyone to fill you or make you complete. We are looking for a partner to live and enjoy, to share our life, and to learn together – not to complete each other.

Change this limiting belief by trying the following affirmations and thoughts:

  • “I love freely because it is part of being human.”
  • “By opening my heart, I will attract the right kind of love into my life.”
  • “My personal relationships help me learn more about myself , and through this learning, I get closer to attracting the right person into my life.

4. I can’t trust people because they always take advantage of me or always cheat on me

Similar to the last limiting belief, trusting in others is a big problem that can restrict you from living the most fulfilling life possible.

Again, this idea is stored in our subconscious, and an important part of the subconscious is making those ideas come true. That is, those things we think and how we see the world generates certain behavior, so we will constantly be living those same beliefs.

This is why it’s so important to practice affirmations and think positive! You can change your behavior through your change in thoughts!

When you live thinking you are not worthy and that you do not deserve, your experiences and experiences prove those ideas and those beliefs.

On the other hand, if you think you are worth it, that you are enough and that everything is going well for you, you will verify these beliefs based on your behavior and the way you see life.

If you live thinking that people take advantage of you or that they always deceive you, it is very likely that you live in fear of rejection, and this generates behavior and experiences that make you live just that.

If you want to start changing your experiences, your life itself, start taking responsibility for your thoughts, your actions, and what you see in your life. Only then will you start to see change.

Trust that you can attract the right people into your life, and when this does not happen and you run into someone who is not completely honest, give yourself the opportunity to trust that this is just a learning lesson and not a sign that anyone deserves your trust.

Trust yourself and your ability to attract honest and positive people into your life.

Change this limiting belief by trying the following affirmations and thoughts:

  • “They all deserve my trust.”
  • “Without trust, I cannot form a meaningful relationship with anyone.”

5. I can’t set goals because I know I’m going to fail

The fear of failure is one of the biggest fears which restricts your success and development. It is the fear of leaving your comfort zone, the fear things will go wrong, and fear of being judged for your mistakes.

Here’s a fact: everyone fails.

In my life, I’ve failed many times to achieve my goals in my work, my side hustles, my relationships, and my development.

But here’s the thing… through these failures, I’ve learned, improved, and have now achieved things beyond my wildest dreams.

When you start on your journey of self improvement, each step of the way there will be setbacks and barriers. When you overcome those setbacks and barriers, you will be on to achieving bigger and better things.

Don’t let the fear of making mistakes stop you. The difference between a successful person and an unsuccessful person is the way they view mistakes. We all make mistakes, we all fall down sometime.

The difference lies in whether you stop and take that experience as learning, or if you stay down and criticize and judge yourself.

Change this limiting belief by trying the following affirmations and thoughts:

  • “My dreams are mine to pursue.”
  • “Whatever I dream, I can achieve. It is up to me to take the steps to make things happen.”
  • “I can do anything I set my mind to.”

6. I always screw things up

This is one of the most limiting beliefs. I’m sure it is quite common, especially when we have a “bad streak.”

There are many situations where all you see is tough times ahead, but with this mentality and limiting belief, you are sure to stay in that situation.

This is a big problem with perfectionists and with people with big expectations.

Instead, trying to re-frame the situation as one in that you are learning, in that you are experimenting, and lowering your expectations slightly can bring better results.

Give yourself the opportunity to try re-framing the situation, change your mentality to a more positive one, and try to know what your skills and strengths are and use them to your advantage.

Everyone screws up, but you can achieve anything you put your mind to. Over time, you’ll turn your mistakes into successes.

7. I don’t need to have more money or be successful

It is true that you don’t need money or success to be happy, but having more money is better than having less money.

It is very common that we look at life and are content with where we are. We don’t want to push harder because we are comfortable and fine with where we are in life.

However, it’s important to approach personal development and growth with a mindset that you are always in motion and always trying to do a little more to improve.

What would having a little more money look like for you? What if you could achieve financial freedom? How would you feel if you had a little more money in investments or your bank?

While you don’t need to get more money in the bank to be happy, being successful with your money, or in your career, can be done with a few simple changes.

Change this limiting belief by trying the following affirmations and thoughts:

  • “I am successful simply because I can.”
  • “By being successful, I have more resources to achieve my highest goals and dreams and to support the highest good of humanity.”

8. I’m too old to chase my dreams

I do not know where the thoughts that being older means we cannot learn, we cannot do or we cannot achieve our dreams. The truth is that success is a matter of mentality and not of age.

There are 80 year old bodybuilders, 90 year old people still crushing it in business, and many people 70 and up who are doing amazing things. Why should it be different in your case?

The only difference is whether or not you give up. It is trusting that over time, you can become whatever you put your mind to and achieve anything in life.

Forget about the standard definition that one must be in a certain place in life and of a certain age to be considered successful. The path of your life is bigger than those predefined limiting beliefs.

Create your own life path and make it happen.

Change this limiting belief by trying the following affirmations and thoughts:

  • “It’s never too late to chase after something. The most important thing is that you act now.”
  • “Age is just a number. My current age is only a reflection of the number of years I have been alive, but not a reflection of my unlimited power as a being.

9. Nobody cares what I say

Like almost all the limiting beliefs we have discussed today, this one in particular arises from when children our parents did not listen to us or pay us the required attention.

This creates that feeling that what we say is not important or that nobody cares about what we say or do.

Realize that everything you are and are capable of contributing to this world is unique.

Everything you say when it comes from your heart has the ability to change a person’s life.

Be more compassionate with yourself, and therefore with others.

Be more positive and focus on seeing the best in yourself, the best in people and speak recognizing the best in each situation and in people.

If you are confident in yourself, and love yourself, then who cares what others think. Speak your truth and speak with confidence. People will listen.

Change Your Thoughts and Change Your Life

With this post, you now know more about how limiting beliefs shape your life and your day to day actions.

With the 10 common limiting beliefs we talked about above, you can now start to change your mindset, change the story you are telling yourself, and get on to success in your life.

I hope this article has invited you to dig deeper and see what really happens inside you. I invite you to work on yourself, to improve your self-esteem and your confidence.

Do you want to be able to achieve any dream or goal you set?

You can do it with the right mindset and by attacking each day with intention.

What are some limiting beliefs you have in your life which are holding you back? What are you going to do to change those thoughts? How do you think others can change their life for the better?

Why is it that some people seem luckier than others? How come some people constantly receive better results, and others do not receive those same results? Do you want to become luckier? In this post, I’m going to talk about how you can create your own luck and get on to achieving whatever goal you want.

In many areas of life, sports, career, relationships, etc., some people seemingly always are achieving, finding success, and getting what they want.

In those same areas, we see others who are catching bad breaks, having a tough time finding success, and never seem to get it right.

Are you a person who falls into the first category, or the second category? Are you someone who is “lucky”, or are you someone who is “unlucky”?

Do you want to find more luck? Are you looking to find success in your life and are just looking for your big break?

In this post, I’m going to talk about how you can create more “luck”, and what you can do to change your life for the better – starting from today.

“The harder I work, the luckier I get” – Samuel Goldwyn

Is Luck Real?

First, is luck real?

Scientists and statisticians have spent many years studying if luck is real or if luck is just a series of fortunate random events.

While statisticians and scientists believe that luck is the interpretation of a series of random events, other people believe luck is real and is part of something bigger (a supernatural force, fate, karma, etc.)

In the first case, scientists believe that people look at a series random events and give more weight to the positive events, i.e., say that those events are lucky.

While an event might be unlikely, just because it occurred doesn’t mean that it was luck.

Also, as I’ve experienced in the past in casinos, while someone might be winning one night, you never know how many other nights they have sat and lost in the same exact chair.

On the other side, people believe that you can create luck through doing good deeds, praying and magic.

While I agree with the scientists and statisticians, I also believe you can improve your chances of having positive results in your life. I do believe that you can manifest your own reality through intentional action, however life might not always manifest in exactly what you expected.

I believe you can create your own “luck” – i.e., improve the chances of you succeeding through your own efforts.

“Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.” – Seneca

How People Create Luck in Life

Whether luck is real or not from a scientific standpoint, I believe that anyone can CREATE their OWN luck through hard work and preparation.

Think about this scenario for a second: you are at work and there is a new management opportunity in your department.

This new position requires a certain certification that you have – a certification that took 300 hours of studying, many long hours of homework and preparation, and a massive test to top it all off.

Some other people in your team don’t have this certification, and others have different certifications.

At the end of the hiring process, management gives you an offer to take this new opportunity because of your previous work and experience.

In this case, are you lucky? Is this an instance of luck?

It might seem like luck, in that the position could have required any number of different requirements, but it wasn’t luck that you got a demanding certification and have been successful in your work.

In this situation, your preparation and work created your own luck.

Have you experienced situations like this in your life? Have you seen where someone suddenly receives something unexpected?

What you maybe didn’t see is the hard work, the preparation, and dedication of that person before.

Overnight success is 5 years in the making, and to create your own luck, you need to have a plan and strategy to reach your goals.

A 5 Step Plan to Create Your Own Luck

Below I’ve laid out 5 steps for you to consider for creating your own luck. Wherever you want to go in life, whatever you want to do, doing the steps below will get you closer to you goals.

You can keep scrolling or click on the following links to go to the section you want.

  1. Take Full Responsibility for Your Life
  2. Decide Today to Start Living Intentionally With Purpose
  3. Create Daily, Weekly and Monthly Goals and a Plan to Achieve Those Goals
  4. Understand that Setbacks and Stretches of Bad Luck Will Happen
  5. Stay Consistent and Don’t Give Up

Below, I’ll go into detail to give you more details on these steps.

1. Take Full Responsibility for Your Life

The first step in making this year the best it can be is deciding to take full responsibility of your life.

You are the only person that can positively affect what happens in your life. Likewise, if something doesn’t go right, then you have to fix you.

If you want more, you need to go and get it – no one else is going to give it to you.

Taking responsibility of your life means you are the sole owner of your future life and only you can do what is necessary to find success.

While you might believe some people are just more lucky than others, you can begin to create your own luck through your work and habits.

2. Decide Today to Start Living Intentionally With Purpose

Ideas, goals, and dreams are worthless without action.

Today, you need to make a decision that is going to change your life forever.

Today, you need to decide that you are going to live with purpose.

Starting today, you are fully responsible for your life, so are you going to let it slip away, or are you going to attack it with all your power and strength?

Today, make a decision to do the right thing for yourself and those around you that you care about.

Today’s the day you start making positive changes and get on the path to achieving your wildest dreams.

3. Create Daily, Weekly and Monthly Goals and a Plan to Achieve Those Goals

The process of setting goals is not too hard.

However, the process of setting goals which you will actually achieve is a little tricky.

Make no mistake though, you can definitely learn the steps to setting good goals, and get in an action based mindset to achieve your goals.

When creating goals for your life, career, health, money, etc., there are a few things you need to do:

  • Deconstruct your destination and goals and break them into smaller sub-goals
  • Set both short and long-term goals
  • Write down your goals and keep them somewhere visible
  • Share your goals with friends and family

First, you need to understand exactly what you want in life.

Do you have personal development goals? Do you have career goals? Are you wanting to get into better shape? Is there anything you want to be able to experience with you family?

All of these questions are important for you to determine exactly what you want.

After answering these questions, you can work on creating goals to achieve in the short term, and in the long term. Creating a daily plan to attack the short term goals is critical and will guide you on the way to success.

After creating your plans, you can hold yourself accountable by telling friends and family, and making sure they keep you on the path to success.

4. Understand that Setbacks and Stretches of Bad Luck Will Happen

Without failure, there is no success. If you achieved everything you set your mind to, where would the growth be? How would that be a great story?

Failure and struggle is part of human nature, and overcoming that struggle is how you grow and become better.

Being honest with you, setbacks happen and they suck. I’ve set savings goals and had appliances break down unexpectedly. I’ve been injured in sports. There have been people who let me down and made me reassess my time and goals.

Each time though, I was able to get through these tough times and get to the other side.

You can bounce back from any mistake and get back on the road to success. You are capable of achieving anything and it’s important to understand that failure is temporary.

As long as we don’t make it a habit of getting into rough patches, you’ll be able to get back on track in no time.

5. Stay Consistent and Don’t Give Up

As I mentioned above, overnight success is usually 5 years in the making. It’s going to be a lot of work, and it’s going to take consistent efforts over time to get to your goals.

The path to success is lonely and demanding.

Here’s the thing though: all it takes is a simple decision and dedication on a daily basis.

Simple daily disciplines will add up over time into massive results.

At first, it’s going to seem like you are trudging through mud and you aren’t going anywhere. Over time, it’ll get easier and easier.

Then all of sudden, you’ll get your breakthrough and you’ll be well on your way to your goals.

All it takes is doing a little bit each day and staying consistent.

I know you can do it, because you have a tremendous potential. You can do whatever you want, and you’ll be on your way to creating your own luck.

Are You Going to Start Creating Your Own Luck Today?

Whether luck is real or not, you can create your own opportunities and put yourself in a better position to achieve your goals.

Achieving your goals might not happen next year, it might not happen the year after, but by working a little bit each and every day, you can accomplish anything you want.

I hope that this article has given you some food for thought on how you can create your own luck in your life, and how you can get on the path to greater and greater success.

What is growth? What is learning? How can we become more intelligent in life to know more, be more and do more? Being smarter, being more intelligent, and knowing more can help us reach out goals and dreams faster. How can we do this? In this post, you will learn 15 ways to become more intelligent in life.

What if you could easily solve any problem you encountered? How would it feel to know more, and be able to navigate difficult situations with ease? What would you do if you were smarter and more intelligent?

Becoming smarter and more intelligent in life has many benefits.

Whether you are trying to reach a specific goal, or just looking to become more well rounded in life, becoming more intelligent will help you on your journey to success.

Being able to comprehend complex ideas, understanding how things work, having the ability to show empathy, and having a good vocabulary are all parts of being smarter and having a higher level of intelligence.

All of this is great, but, how do we become more intelligent? What is intelligence? Why does being smart matter?

In this post, we will talk about what intelligence is, why being smart is important, and you’ll learn 15 ways to become more intelligent in your life to improve your chances of becoming successful.

What is Intelligence and Why is Being Smart Important?

First, let’s talk about what intelligence is, and why being smart is important.

Intelligence can be defined many different ways.

To me, intelligence is the ability to learn, the ability to understand, the ability to problem solve, and the ability to grow.

There are many types of intelligence, and some common ones could be described as practical intelligence, creative intelligence, emotional intelligence, and analytical intelligence.

Practical intelligence is “street smarts” or “common sense”, creative intelligence is “abstract thinking”, emotional intelligence is “handling the emotions of yourself and others”, and analytical intelligence is “book smarts”.

Why is being smart important?

This might be obvious, but being smart and being intelligent:

  • can open many doors in life
  • is attractive to potential partners
  • is attractive to potential employers
  • unlock new skills and abilities in your day to day activities
  • can help you reach your goals

With this in mind, let’s now move on to the 15 ways you can become more intelligent in your life.

“Your level of success is rarely exceeded by your level of personal development, because success is something you attract by the person you become.” – Hal Elrod

15 Ways to Become More Intelligent in Life

Do you want to become smarter? How can you become more intelligent in life?

Growing, improving, and learning are all pieces of becoming more intelligent.

However, there is also a mindset shift that must happen if you want to become smarter.

Through this mindset shift, you will start to change as a person, change your daily habits, and grow – not only your brain, but also as a person in many ways.

Becoming smarter will help you unlock new avenues and opportunities in life, and bring success as you get to your full potential.

Below are 15 ways to become more intelligent in life. If you want, you can click on a link below to go directly to the section with that step, or you can scroll down to read them in order.

  12. Learn a New Language and Learn in that Language
  13. Live Intentionally and Take Responsibility for Your Life
  14. Teach Others How to Do Something
  15. Make Learning a Part of Your Every Day Life

Let’s dive into the details of each of these steps to become smarter below.

1. Stand on the Shoulders of Giants

“If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.” – Isaac Newton

First and foremost, if you want to become smarter, it’s important to recognize those who have came before us who have achieved great successes.

The quote above from Isaac Newton refers to the fact that when we are just growing up and becoming more knowledgeable, we are like dwarfs – we aren’t very tall and we cannot see very far. This is similar to when we are kids – we don’t know much and have much to learn.

However, if you stand on the shoulder of a giant, you can see for miles. If we read from those who were successful, we can gain insight into how we can become more successful in our lives.

If you want to become smarter, read about some of the amazing people of our past and present, and you can gain a piece of their experience for yourself.

For example, a few years ago, I read about Jeff Bezos and some of the story of Amazon. 20 years of events, information, and thoughts were condensed into a book which I read in just a few weeks.

Before, I didn’t know anything about the inner workings of Amazon and how Jeff Bezos thought on a short and long term basis.

However, after, I now understood more about their business and what it means to become one of the biggest and most influential companies in the world.

For you, if you want to become smarter, it’s time to read and learn from the giants of the past.

2. Redefine Learning

“I keep challenging myself. I see life almost like one long university education that I never had – every day I’m learning something new. – Richard Branson

What is learning? Is it something you do at school? Is it something that stops after college? Is learning something that needs a textbook, or is it anything that stimulates our brains?

To me, learning is something anyone can do. Learning does not require a book, and certainly continues after school.

The most successful people in the world are continuously learning – they are constantly reading, coming up with new ideas, talking with other successful people, and growing.

To become smarter, you need to redefine learning.

First, learning is not something that need a teacher for and you definitely do not need a book to learn. Learning can happen anywhere and at any time!

Second, learning is a process that will bring both successes and failures. Learning is not a linear path to becoming an expert.

Rather, learning is the process of going from not knowing a lot to becoming knowledgeable and proficient in a certain area. Learning takes time, but, through experimentation, you can become more intelligent in a subject.

3. Become Curious in Everyday Life and Ask Questions

One of the first steps to becoming smarter is to realize that their are gaps in your knowledge and improving your understanding of various things will be beneficial for you in the future.

Being closed minded and living in an echo chamber is not helpful for achieving your goals.

It’s okay to say “I don’t know” and look to answer the questions you have.

Having a growth mindset and looking to learn a little bit each day is critical if you want to become more intelligent.

You cannot know more if you don’t poke around curiously for the answer.

Realize that in each interaction you have, you can learn something or pick up a new tip. If you stay doing the same thing everyday, that’s all you are going to get.

If you change things up, you can start to make improvements and correct the mistakes you’ve made in the past.

Even if these questions are just clarifying a situation, they can make all the difference in your understanding and lead to becoming more intelligent as you now know of more of the full picture.

4. Get Enough Sleep and Rest Every Night

Getting enough sleep and rest each day is a key part of growth and learning.

Just like your muscles, you need to allow your brain a rest and time to grow.

There have been many studies looking at learning, memory and the quantity and quality of sleep a person receives.

When we get enough sleep, we are able to perform at a higher level, but if we are sleep deprived, we are more forgetful and do not perform at our best.

When trying to learn, it’s important to get enough sleep – whether this is 6 hours, 8 hours, or 10 hours is up to you to figure out.

The point here is that your brain is just like your muscles. You need to mix it up and give it a rest to see optimal gains.

5. Spend Time Exploring a New Place

When you were a kid, did you ever go to a new place and have the best time of your life? Exploring, making new connections, and discovering this new place were some of the best times and always very fun.

As an adult, I’ve done this as well from time to time in my own city and state, and think it’s still as exciting and stimulating as when I did it as a kid.

Going to a new place and just walking around, exploring, and leaving all expectations at the door can be freeing. Doing this can allow your brain to make new connections and exercise in different ways.

I’ve also experienced this by going to new stores or restaurants in different areas of the city I live in. For example, just going for a coffee at a different coffee shop (pre-COVID) and sitting there watching those around you interact can be something different and new.

The point of learning is to give you brain new stimuli and to allow it to grow over time.

With exploration and experimentation, you can will challenge your brain to grow.

6. Conduct Experiments and Get Outside Your Comfort Zone

Here’s something to internalize: the only way you are going to grow is by getting outside your comfort zone.

Testing your assumptions, making mistakes, and correcting your errors will lead to more successes over time.

However, without those experiments, you will not have learned what to do in situations that require change and adjustment, and for this, you will be lacking intelligence in that area.

What do I mean by conducting experiments?

Conducting experiments could be as easy as reading a book about communication and testing some of the greetings in the book on people in real life to see their reaction.

Maybe you read about a new way to say “what’s up” (this is a dumb example, but it’s still an experiment!)

You say this new way to say “what’s up” and the person talking to you lights up with excitement and proceeds to tell you about their life.

This would be positive feedback to your experiment and if you want to continue to see success, you can keep using this phrase.

Again, this is just an example. However, for you, you should figure out which areas of life you want to improve in, start experimenting and learning, and over time, you’ll become more intelligent in those areas.

7. Do Something Creative Every Day

Becoming smarter involves activating different parts of your brain. As mentioned above, intelligence comes in different flavors, and creative intelligence is one of those different flavors.

Doing something creative each day will help you become smarter and more intelligent.

Whether that’s:

  • making music
  • writing in a journal
  • designing a website
  • painting a picture
  • doing photography
  • cooking a meal
  • sewing a new piece of clothing

all that matters is you are activating and exercising the creative part of your brain.

8. Exercise

Just like diet, exercise is another important piece to becoming smarter.

For me, I try to do a little bit each day. I enjoy doing bodyweight exercises, biking, walking, rock climbing, and playing basketball with friends.

I don’t have a gym pass, and don’t subscribe to the thought that you need to be a meat head to be getting the full benefits of exercise.

Instead, doing a little bit each day, 30-60 minutes of activity will be good for your health and wellness.

Getting your blood pumping will help with brain activity – and through this, you’ll allow your brain the necessary stimulation to help you with your learning goals.

9. Eat Healthy Foods to Give Your Brain the Necessary Energy it Needs

Have you ever heard of the saying, you are what you eat?

Putting garbage into your body will result in having a garbage physique and mental state.

If you want to become smarter, giving your brain and body the proper nutrients and energy it needs to very important.

Getting your diet right is a piece of learning because food is what fuels you to take action on your goals and to continue to improve in life.

Everyone will be different in what kind of food they can eat, but getting your diet right involves eating healthy foods and drinking a lot of water.

For me, eating healthy means eating a high fat, high protein diet with a lot of fruits and vegetables mixed in.

Also, for my health, I’ve experimented with fasting and do intermittent fasting, and also I’ve had to figure out if there was any additional supplementation that I needed to obtain the proper mix of vitamins and minerals.

Eating right will help you get to your peak performance in learning and action, which will in turn help you become smarter and more successful.

10. Surround Yourself with Books from Different Eras and With Different Topics

Would you rather be an expert in one subject, or a jack of all trades?

Some of the smartest people in the world are so smart because they can pull from their experiences in a wide range of situations and apply a different solution to the current problem.

Reading both fiction books and non-fiction books with different topics will expose you to different ideas and help you become more intelligent.

I’ve found that some of the best life messages came from books where I didn’t think I’d get much value out of it before reading the book.

With this, it’s important to not live in an echo chamber and read about things outside your usual area of expertise to fill in your gaps of knowledge.

11. Do What You Like and Try to Become Better at it

I have a question: would you rather spend time doing things you like, or do things you don’t like?

The answer is clearly that you would rather do things that you enjoy doing…

Becoming smarter can be done if you approach the things you like doing with the thought of “how can I get better at this?”

For example, I love playing golf. Over the past few months, I’ve been researching how I can hit the ball straighter wen I want to hit it straight, or how I can add spin if I want the ball to curve.

This has taken a lot of practice and time to learn how my body can affect the swing of the golf club, but over time, I’ve become more self-aware of my hands, arms and body when I swing, and I’ve improved.

While I’m still improving, I’ve become smarter in golf and now I’m better than I was before.

What do you enjoy doing?

If you love cooking, how can you make your food taste better? If you love running, how can you get faster, or run more without causing injury?

Through answering these questions, you’ll become smarter in what you are doing, and become more intelligent.

12. Learn a New Language and Learn in that Language

It has been proven that bilingual people are smarter, and through learning a second language, you will challenge yourself to use your brain in different ways.

However, if you learn a new language, and then learn in that language, you will be stimulating your brain in two different ways at the same time!

Over the past year, I’ve learned how to communicate in Spanish. After 2 years of high school Spanish 10 years ago, I didn’t have much of a base of knowledge, but through dedication, studying and practice, I’m now able to discuss many topics in Spanish comfortably. I’m not perfect, but my Spanish is very good for a non-native speaker.

It has been a lot of work, but now, I watch videos on YouTube in Spanish to further practice, but also to learn more about different subjects.

For you, even obtaining a level of A2 or B1 on the CEFR scale can be achieved in less than a year, and after this, you will continue to grow and build upon your successes.

13. Live Intentionally and Take Responsibility of Your Life

Taking responsibility for your life is one of the fastest ways to become smarter.

If you don’t know something, who’s fault is it?

If you think it is your fault that you don’t know something, then that is the first step to knowing it.

Once you make the decision that you are going to learn a subject, and you start learning, you are on the way to becoming smarter.

Living intentionally is better than living unintentionally, and once you make the decision to live intentionally, your life will change for the better.

14. Teach Others How to Do Something

It is said that true proficiency in a topic is when you can teach someone else how to do something.

When you are able to teach someone something, you are showing you have the knowledge and skills to back up that teaching.

Think for example of a time when you taught someone something… were you able to make sense of the problem or situation at hand, and guide them to a solution?

If you didn’t know the topic or situation at hand well enough, you wouldn’t have been able to help them.

Instead, you had the knowledge and the information in your brain, and with this knowledge, you were able to help them.

Teaching can come in many forms: tutoring, blogging, creating a course, volunteering, etc.

The point here is that the more you teach, the deeper your knowledge of a subject becomes, and through this, the smarter you become.

15. Make Learning a Part of Your Everyday Life

“I don’t believe anyone can be “improved” by buying and reading a book. They can only be “improve, if that is the word, by their own actions.” – Felix Dennis

Becoming smarter is not something you can accomplish just by saying you are going to become smarter.

While yes, in theory, you can start making smarter decisions from this moment on, but changing the way you think and your mindset towards life will take some work.

Learning needs to be an part of your life everyday; you need to turn into a learning machine if you want to become more knowledgeable and smarter in life.

Consistent efforts and action will be key on your journey. Reading a little bit , answering unanswered questions you might have, listening to podcasts, and watching instructional videos each day will add up over time.

Through these efforts, you will be able to accomplish your goal of becoming more intelligent, and you’ll be on to amazing things.

Will You Become Smarter this Year to Help You Achieve Your Goals?

Decide today that you are going to become better in life, and decide today that you are going to become smarter.

Whatever the reason, the decision to improve in life is always a noble one, and through your actions, you’ll set yourself up to do amazing things.

It might not happen tomorrow, it might not happen next month, but over time, by following the steps above, you will become smarter and you’ll be on the path to achieving your goals.

I know you can do it and I know you can reach your full potential in life.

Readers: which steps will you take first to becoming smarter? What’s your favorite book? Who have you learned more from in your life?

Are you mentally strong, or do you have doubts that you can achieve more? Are you able to break through barriers, or does your mind let you down? In this post, you’ll learn how to break through mental barriers, how to improve your mentality, and how using these new superpowers of mental strength will help you achieve anything you want.

Wouldn’t life be easy if you could achieve anything you set your mind to? How would it feel if you could attain any position or receive any reward you set out to receive?

The questions above are pretty interesting, in that I’m guessing you would love to achieve many things in life.

For me, I’d love to go full time as an entrepreneur. I’d love to workout every day and attain a physique like a model. I’d love to become better at rock climbing, golf, and other hobbies I have. It would be awesome to travel the world, learn new languages, and learn more about other cultures.

However, as I start to dream, plan and get on the path to crushing my goals, my pesky inner voice starts to intervene.

“Are you sure you can make it as an entrepreneur?”

“You don’t have good enough genetics to become super fit.”

“You aren’t talented enough to become better at your hobbies.”

“Do you know how much time it takes to learn a new language? What are you thinking?”

Maybe you’ve had the same experience with your inner voice.

During these times, and times when you are on your journey to getting what you want, having a strong mental game is incredibly important for staying on track and not getting stressed.

Being able to take these negative thoughts, and turn them into positive, motivating thoughts is critical and a skill you can develop.

Saying “Yes, it’s hard to achieve X, but I can do it by surrounding myself with the right people” or “Talent can be beaten by hard work and I’m going to work as hard as I can to reach my goals” can make all the difference when we get discouraged.

Getting through tough times and setbacks requires grit and determination, and in this post, you’ll learn how to better control your emotions, understand your powerful brain, and develop a strong mental game for success.

Your mind is a powerful thing. When you fill it with positive thoughts, your life will start to change.

Your Mental Ability is Highly Critical for Success in Life

In sports, often times, the difference between the winner and a loser will be the winner’s ability to block out distractions, focus on the task at hand, and stay positive through adversity.

Cultivating a strong mental game comes from many hours of practice and preparation, and helps us build confidence in ourselves.

What many people don’t realize is that outside of sports, having a strong mental game is equally as important.

In the workplace, being able to get through stressful periods successfully can help us overcome any obstacle and lead to promotions, more responsibility and a higher salary.

At home, if you are constantly getting upset and not being able to resolve issues, you’ll become frustrated and angry.

But, being able to bounce back, communicate if someone has hurt you, and move on to spending quality time with your partner, everything can be back to normal and you’ll be happier.

As we have discussed briefly here, having a strong mental game is important, but what are some of the differences between being mentally tough and mentally weak? How can we become better mentally?

Let’s dive into those questions now.

The Differences Between Being Mentally Tough and Mentally Weak

There are a few differences between being mentally tough and being mentally weak.

In particular, I want to focus on a few situations where the difference between being mentally tough and mentally weak are apparent.

Situation one is being happy vs. sad. In this case, I’m not talking about clinical depression – I’m talking about in a game, business or around the house. Mentally tough are able to move on quicker from a setback and get back to being positive about the situation at hand. Mentally weak people dwell on the current situation and let it affect their energy and day.

For example, if the boss comes to you with negative feedback on a mistake you made, a mentally tough person will take the feedback and work on doing better next time. They don’t waste energy on things they can’t control (the past), and welcome the challenge of doing better next time.

A mentally weak person might blame themselves, blame someone else, be afraid to take the next assignment, and become discouraged at work.

Another example is with relationships. I’ve hard to learn this one the hard way many times, but sometimes two people are not meant for each other.

There have been relationships in my past where I spent weeks and months getting over an ex, but as I became more mature, I’ve learned that sometimes people aren’t truly perfect for each other, and everything happens for a reason.

As I’ve become more mature and mentally strong, I’ve been able to move on and not waste time on feeling sorry for myself – I realize that even though it didn’t work out this time, there is someone else out there who I can make happy and can make me happy.

Now, let’s get into the 7 steps for you to work on to break through mental barriers and improve yourself.

7 Steps to Breaking Through Mental Barriers and Improving Yourself Mentally

What are the steps and things you can do to becoming better mentally? Like any skill, you can take a number of steps and actions to improve.

Below are the 7 steps you can take and try to break through mental barriers and improve as a person mentally. You can click on any of the links below to go directly to the section, or continue to scroll down the page.

  1. Realize the Importance of Mental Strength
  2. Practice with Intention
  3. Do Affirmations
  4. Visualize Success in Your Life
  5. Do Breathing Exercises to Manage Stress
  6. Read about Exercises to Improve Mentally
  7. Realize that Setbacks Will Happen, but You Can Overcome Anything

Let’s dive into each of these points in greater detail.

1. Understand that Mental Strength Will Get You As Far As Any Other Skill

As discussed above in the opening few paragraphs, your mental strength and fortitude will keep you going and get your farther than any talent or ability alone.

The ability to stick with something, to be positive, and to continue to work until the job is done is more important than having the talent to do something.

Mental toughness is the gasoline which fuels your actions and abilities. Without gasoline, it doesn’t matter if you have a 500 horsepower car or a 50 horsepower car – you aren’t going anywhere.

With gasoline, and with a strong mental game, anything is possible.

Understanding that mental strength is something that you need to work on and is a skill that can be improved is s

2. Practice with Intention to Gain Confidence in Yourself

Deliberate practice is a great way to improve your skills and grow as a person.

Instead of going through the motions, using deliberate practice for improvement can help you become mentally stronger.

Over time, through practice, you can gain confidence. This confidence will work to your advantage when you get into situations where you need to be at your best.

In sports, the best players don’t worry about taking the last shot because they have practiced thousands of times for that moment.

For them, it’s not the first time they have done that, and as a result, they have the mental fortitude and confidence to perform to the best of their abilities.

Practicing and making sure you are doing the best you can do in any moment will lead to confidence, and through confidence, you’ll have the belief in yourself to do whatever you want in life.

3. Do Affirmations to Tell Yourself You are Enough

Our minds are incredibly powerful and can quite literally create its own reality.

Using positive thinking can manifest itself in living the life you want to live.

Telling yourself you are a positive person will result in you becoming a more positive person.

You are what you say you are.

Saying, “I’m a negative person who can never accomplish anything” is a reinforcing trap. Saying this sort of thing will result in you being a negative person who will never accomplish anything.

Likewise, telling yourself, “I’m a positive person who can accomplish anything” will lead to accomplishments beyond your wildest dreams.

Using positive thinking can help guide you on your path to becoming more mentally strong.

4. Utilize Visualization to Live the Moment Before You Experience it

Similar to affirmations, you can use visualization to experience your desired outcome before it happens.

When you visualize a situation, you are tricking your mind into thinking you’ve already experienced it, and with each visualization, you become more confident.

Visualization helps you activate your subconscious into working it’s magic and helps you build your internal motivation to do your best when the time comes.

Sit in a quiet room and think about your goals and future situations you want to find success in. Try to think about all of the possibilities and try to fully experience the moment before it happens.

See yourself succeeding with that important speech, in the test to help you gain a new qualification, or winning the race you’ve been training for forever.

With visualization, you can gain confidence in your abilities and when the time comes, you’ll be ready to rock and crush your goals.

5. Learn about Breathing Techniques to Help Relax when You are Stressed

Slowing down and focusing on our breathing has many benefits.

Breathing relieves anxiety, stress and tension in the body. Also, breathing can help our mental state by helping stop panic attacks, freezing or choking under pressure and lowers our stress levels.

I try to do deep breathing a few times a day to keep myself centered and focused on the task at hand. It’s helped me a lot in keeping my cool, and has served me well.

Here’s a link for 10 breathing exercises to try: 10 Breathing Exercises

6. Read Books about Mental Strength and Overcoming Adversity

Reading books from experts in mental strength can help you develop habits to become better mentally. Having an edge in your ability to overcome things will help you achieve any goal you set, and help you separate yourself from the rest of the world as a world class individual.

I love reading, and some of the books I’ve read on mental strength have been eye opening. Reading about Olympic Gold medalists and top performers is interesting, but at the highest level, mental preparation is what separates the gold medalist from the bronze medalist.

In particular, I’ve read and reviewed the following three books which I think will help you with working on your mental game: With Winning in MindUnbeatable MindThe Slight Edge.

Learning from experts is always great – we need to stand on the shoulders of giants to be able to see far!

7. Realize Mistakes Happen, But You Can Bounce Back

Without failure, there is no success. If you achieved success in everything you did, where would the growth be? How would that be a great story?

Failure and struggle is part of human nature, and overcoming that struggle is how you grow and become better.

Being honest with you, setbacks happen and they suck. I’ve had injuries in sports where I had to sit out for some time – it sucked and it made me thankful for the times I was able to play. It made me reassess my game and be smarter with my head.

However, when I recovered, I was rested and ready to give it my all, and I started playing better than before.

You can bounce back from any mistake and get back on the road to success. You are capable of achieving anything and it’s important to understand that failure is temporary.

Are You Going to Become Mentally Strong in the Next Few Weeks?

I hope you’ve enjoyed this article on mental strength, and I hope that you are now interested in pursuing some of the exercises above to become more mentally strong and crush your goals.

Improving in any skill takes time, but with consistent actions and intentional practice, you can get to a point where it’s automatic and you are a rockstar.

You are on to living your best life and through these actions, you’ll be closer to your goals each and every day.

power of positive thinking

Having a good mindset, a positive attitude, and using the power of positive thinking can help you achieve all of your goals. In this post, you’ll learn how to have a strong positive mind, the benefits of positive thinking, and how you can use affirmations for positive thinking.

The Power of Positive Thinking

I have an exercise for you to do tomorrow morning when you wake up.

Before you moan and groan about exercise, I’m not talking about some sort of physical exercise.

Instead, a mental exercise.

When you wake up tomorrow morning, say to yourself, “I’m a positive person.” 3 times.

“I’m a positive person.”

“I’m a positive person.”

and once more:

“I’m a positive person.”

Then go about your day the usual way you would.

Mindset is everything. Having a strong mental game is as important as having skills or talents. Positive thinking has been proven to lead to more success than negative thinking.

While this probably sounds good in all, let’s dive a little deeper here into the power of positive thinking.

In this post, I’m going to share with you the benefits of positive thinking, talk about affirmations, talk about how thinking positive thoughts has changed my life, and share with you how you can have a strong, positive mind.

The Benefits of Positive Thinking

There are many benefits of positive thinking.

Some of the benefits of positive thinking includes:

  • Increased life span
  • Better coping skills in timing of hardships
  • Better psychological and physical well-being
  • Increased willpower when looking to achieve our goals

Positive thinking and having a good mindset and outlook on life can be very beneficial for trying to create a life you want and deserve.

Our minds are incredibly powerful and can quite literally create its own reality.

The power of positive thinking can manifest itself in living the life that you want to live.

The human mind has a way of creating it’s own view of the world and through this view, that is the world.

One way in which you can create a good mindset for yourself is with affirmations. In the next section, I’m going to share with you how you can use affirmations and give you some examples of affirmations for positive thinking.

What are Affirmations and How You Can Use Affirmations in Your Life

Let’s start simple. What are affirmations?

An affirmation is a statement of truth.

Affirmations strengthen us because we can “trick” our brains into thinking what we want in this world.

An affirmation is as simple as the following statement, “I’m a nice person.”

An affirmation also could be more involved, such as, “I’m a person who is looking to become better in my relationships and I’m focusing on asking better questions.”

Typically, the statement you choose will be something you want to change in your life.

If you want to become a nicer person, tricking your brain by saying, “I’m a nice person”, will result in you becoming nicer!

By using affirmations, we can trick our powerful brains into becoming who we want to become.

“Every time you choose the easy thing, instead of the right thing, you are shaping your identity, becoming the type of person who does what is easy, rather than what is right.”

How to Write an Effective Affirmation

Writing effective affirmations, for yourself, is easy.

First, turn inward and think for yourself for a minute.

What do you want to change in your life? Who do you want to be? What are you struggling with?

Right now in my life, I’m struggling a little bit with focus and balance.

Taking this struggle, I can flip it around into an affirmation which will bring my brain to focus on what’s important.

Here’s my affirmation for the day:

“I’m able to focus for long periods of time and get my work done.”

Notice a few things:

  • I started my affirmation with “I”
  • I wrote in the present tense
    • Right now, I’m focused – not, I’m going to focus (if I’m going to, I never will)
  • The affirmation was positive
    • Positive thinking is incredibly powerful and will lead you to where you want to go.

Using the three bullet points above as a loose framework will help you write affirmations for yourself.

Examples of Affirmations for Positive Thinking

Back at the end of 2016, I got really into affirmations. Recently, I was digging through my drawer of old notebooks and found some of my affirmations. Below are some of those affirmations.

12/11/16 “I am charming, easy going, and can get along with many types of people. I”m capable of brightening the lives of other people with my great smile and big heart. I will ask good, penetrating, and thoughtful questions at work and at home to gain a better perspective on life. At the end of each day, I will reflect on the questions I asked people to better understand my interactions and to increase my ability to connect with others.”

12/12/16 “I am persistent, diligent, and detail oriented in my work. I want to climb the ladder at work. By doing the work I have done, I believe I can get there. More responsibility brings more money and options, and I want more money and options. To get there, I need to ask good, penetrating and thoughtful questions. I will do what is right, not what is easy, and will achieve this goal.”

12/16/16 “I am the owner of what happens in my life. I want to meet and hang out with amazing, beautiful women. It’s time to align my goals with my actions. I want a beautiful family. By being charming, easy-going, and kind, I will accomplish this.

12/17/16 “I am patient, I am kind, I am aware.”

12/18/16 “I am reliable, I am friendly, I am determined to succeed”

12/21/16 “I am capable of coming up with creative ideas”

12/27/16 “I’m an investor. I’m building financial wealth. Is today the day I find an opportunity to make a deal?” (I was reading The Millionaire Real Estate Investor)

After spending a month doing these affirmations, I was feeling much better about my situation, but still had a lot of work to do. I was looking to find a girlfriend, and later did in 2017. A hope of mine was for a raise at my corporate job. 16 months later, I had received 2 promotions. Finally, I wanted to create a blog and business, and since have.

These affirmations allowed me to tap into my powerful brain and manifest my wants and goals. Now, it’s your turn.

Tap Into Your Powerful Brain and Influence Your Life With Affirmations

Becoming a better person, and someone who is more successful in what they do, will take time, but it can be accomplished.

Here’s the thing: you have a powerful brain.

By thinking critically about what you want, asking good, penetrating, and thoughtful questions at yourself, and getting answers will result in some action items to implement.

With these action items comes a call to become better as a person and a shift in your mindset.

With affirmations, you can influence your life and become who you want to be.

Now, let’s talk about how you can develop a strong mindset for yourself.

The Power of a Good Mindset and How Mindset is Everything

Having a good mindset and a strong will to want to work towards your goal is something great to strive for.

Having the grit to want to keep going is something rare and can set you apart from the rest of the herd.

Success in this world comes from action and consistency.

Consistent efforts added up over time WILL lead to amazing success and results.

Many people, myself included, deal with a lack of consistency.

Think about exercising. Maybe you exercise 3 times one week and only 1 the next. Maybe the week after 0 times and the week after that 2 times. The results you want probably won’t come from this routine.

With mindset, this inconsistency can be avoided.

Saying “I’m a person who is consistent and does not procrastinate.” will affect your actions.

It’s a tough world out there, but with our words and powerful mind, we can accomplish a lot.

While things may not have gone to plan in the past, that’s okay.

Having a strong mindset is accepting the past for what it is and moving on to bigger and better things.

How Thinking Positive Has Changed My Life

When I was younger playing sports, I didn’t have a strong mental game. I’d let things get into my head and couldn’t let them go.

My dad always harped on me to try to not let those emotions get the best of me. I had to look inwards and seek out the answers. I had to tap into my powerful mind to control the emotions of anger and sadness and funnel them towards performance.

It took a number of years, but over time, I was able to control my emotions and understand that bad things happen. Good things also happen. If I could stay level headed – not get too high or too low – I’d see more success.

Change is really hard.

In physics, the first law of motion, put simply, is an object at rest will stay at rest.

To start moving, energy and force must act on that object; otherwise, it will stay at rest.

Change is beautiful.

Have you ever started to work on something new and felt worse about yourself? I can’t think of a time where I actively pursued growth and didn’t become better.

Over time, I got better. It was beautiful, fulfilling and fun.

Change is okay.

Resisting change is a recipe for sadness.

If something is not going well, you have the ability to change and you are free to do what you can to make the situation better.

How to Have a Strong, Positive Mind

abundance mindsetMake no mistake, taking control of your life and becoming success is tough.

Developing a strong and positive mind will not happen overnight, but you will be able to go it over time.

Improving over time will be tough, but is possible with getting into the right mindset and understanding the right thoughts will get you to your goals.

Without community and helping others, the personal growth and change is empty.

There are three concepts I want to talk about with regards to change in this article:

  • the herd mentality
  • how you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with
  • the fact that you have the ability to change your situation

Let’s dive more into each of these.

Think Critically, Don’t Accept the Herd

One of the things which is absolutely CRITICAL for success in life is critical thinking and determining what is important in life.

Something I’ve been seeing a ton lately in the media and blogging space is the comment:

“the stock market always goes up! keep dollar cost averaging!”

Many of these people are the EXACT same people who were bashing the run up of cryptocurrencies.

There are a lot of things on my mind which are outside of the scope of this post (namely, inflation, how energy – not money – drives the economy, and debt fueled corporate buybacks) and I don’t want to fear monger either.

With this said, when you are on the side of the majority, sometimes it’s good to do a little research and reassess your position. Confirmation bias is at play here as well (another concept I won’t get into in this post but worth mentioning).

Naturally, humans form tribes, migrate in groups, and perform cooperative work. It’s in our DNA to follow the group for safety and sustainability reasons.

Because of the herd mentality, we can sometimes get trapped in thoughts which control and restrict us.

In terms of change, those following the herd will not change for fear of losing their status in a tribe.

If your tribe isn’t progressing as you’d like to be progressing, maybe it’s time to make a change.

You are the Average of the 5 People You Spend the Most Time With

Something that I’ve struggled with in my life is making friends.

After I grew up a little and found a great group of friends in high school, and then in college, I found myself falling into ruts and not getting to where I wanted to be in life.

Building extreme wealth is one of my goals in life, and many of my friends did not share this same goal; they were happy with getting by comfortably, but not willing to push the envelope.

Over the past few years, I’ve started to shift my friend circle to include more entrepreneur types, people who are interested in pursuing different extremes, and people who are on the way to financial freedom.

Not only has this motivated me to become better, it’s exposed me to new ideas, new views, and my worldview has changed for the better.

Many of my friends didn’t understand my choices or decisions. “Come on, let’s play some Xbox tonight! Stop reading!”

You may have noticed this as well, but there are certain people who don’t want to see you succeed or who are haters.

People who live like this have a scarcity mindset – living in abundance is foreign to them, but not to us.

You can win and I can win – and when we both grow, we are capable of so much more.

You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with in all areas of life: physical fitness, career, emotional intelligence, street smarts, wealth, etc.

I’ll never forget where I came from, but I’ve realized that to achieve my goals, I needed to make a change. Now, I have to value my time, I’ve changed my habits, and I’m raising my average by hanging out with people more successful than me.

There’s an unstoppable force living inside of you

Change for the sake of change is not what I’m recommending. Change for the sake of change, if rooted in rash decision making and not thinking for yourself, will not lead to success.

The human brain is incredibly powerful.

You have a potential inside of you which is unstoppable. Through simple daily disciplines, through critical thinking, and through tweaking habits in your life for the better, you will be successful.

YOU have the power to change your situation.

Make no mistake: CHANGE is really hard.

Like a rock rolling down a hill, the first push is really hard to do and the rock only moves a few inches. The next push, a few more inches. Another push and a few feet. After a few more pushes, the rock is rolling down the hill with little effort on your part.

Change is beautiful. Motion is beautiful. The rock is rolling down the hill without much effort and isn’t stopping.

My main recommendation for you in this post is to understand change is okay. It’s okay to do things a little different than others; it’s okay to think differently than others as well.

Change is difficult, change is beautiful, and change is okay.

Thinking critically for yourself and seeking a better life will be fulfilling.

The Power of Positive Thinking

The power of positive thinking.
The power of positive thinking.

When you are stuck, knowing when to push, or when to take a break can be crucial for your long term success. Sometimes pushing through a setback can be a good strategy, while other times taking a break can be good. In this post, I’m going to give you some tips on how to deal with a setback.

Over the past few months, I’ve been working out multiple times a week. Through this time, I’ve been getting stronger and progressing very nicely, but I’ve had a setback.

Last night, I went to do some push-ups, and didn’t warm up enough.

After a set of ten push-ups, I felt a numbness in my chest right at the front of my armpit.

I didn’t know what had happened, but knew my chest workout was done.

After some research online, I determined I’d pulled my pectoralis major, and I should apply ice and rest for a few days to make sure it doesn’t develop into something worse.

Working out multiple times a week has been a huge part of my life this year, and to need to take a break from all things upper body (which is tough since I primarily rock climb) will be tough, but hopefully I can come back even stronger with rest.

Since I’m now resting for the next few days, I figured I’d write about what I’m going to do to rest, recover, and how I’m going to deal with this setback.

In this post, I’m going to discuss five tips for you to apply in your life if you are dealing with a setback.

5 Things to Do to Deal With a Setback

Setbacks are not fun, but with the right strategy and game plan, you can overcome your setback and get around that obstacle.

Below are 5 things you can do to deal with a setback and find success:

  1. Breathe and Relax
  2. Reflect on Your Current Situation
  3. Focus Your Mind on Other Tasks
  4. Understand Progress Takes Time and Setbacks are Inevitable
  5. Distance Yourself from the Problem and Come Back at a Later Time

Let’s dive into each of these in more detail below.

Taking action and living intentionally will lead to success over time. By following the steps above, you can crush this setback and get back on the right path.

1. Breathe and Relax

First, take a deep breath and collect yourself.

Life is full of twists, turns, highs and lows.

I don’t know where I’m going to be tomorrow, and I need to adapt on a daily basis to what I’m given to do my best in the next moment.

Everyone experiences a setback once in a while, and the people who are MOST successful are the ones who can bounce back.

Starting off with getting over your setback, focus on your breathing.

Breathing allows you to slow down, get your bearings, and relax.

Your brain needs air to think and process information! Give your brain what it needs! 🙂

2. Reflect on Your Current Situation

Next, after breathing, reflect on your current situation.

A few questions you could ask yourself are:

  • What was the cause of your setback?
  • Could you have done anything different?
  • Is there anything you can do in the future differently to bring about a better outcome?
  • What’s the best next steps you can take to get back on the path to your goals?

For me, I know the cause of my injury: i didn’t warm up enough and pushed too hard too early in the workout. I could have warmed up more and not been so aggressive.

After I recover, I’ll be more careful with my warm ups, and for the next few days, I’m not going to do any upper body exercises.

For you, listening to your body and listening to those around you who know what they are talking about will be best for moving on in your life.

3. Focus Your Mind on Other Tasks

While it might seem like the best choice in the moment to keep pushing and grinding away at a task, sometimes focusing on some other task can be very beneficial.

Do you ever get your most inspiring thoughts in the shower or when doing other mundane tasks?

Sometimes my best ideas come to me when I’m vacuuming or brushing my teeth!

Focusing your mind on something else that is routine and doesn’t take that much brain power can lead to making a breakthrough and getting over the hump.

Your subconscious brain will keep working in the background, and when you come back to your problem, you’ll be ready to rock!

patience in relationships4. Understand Progress Takes Time and It’s Okay to Take Breaks

As I mentioned above, life is not linear.

However, taking it a step further, progress takes time and it’s okay to take breaks.

What I mean by this is your body and progress actualizes when you rest.

For example, when you workout, you are breaking down your muscles. When you rest, your muscles build back up and you become stronger.

When you are learning, you only get long term retention through repetition and allowing your brain to absorb information over time.

Taking a break and allowing yourself to recover sometimes is the best way to move forward.

5. Distance Yourself From the Problem and Come Back at a Later Time

Do you need a vacation?

As I mentioned in point number three, focusing on other tasks and giving yourself a break can be a great strategy when trying to get past a setback.

But one other thing to consider is literally distancing yourself from a problem and allowing yourself to the space to grow and recoup for another day.

A vacation might be best, but sometimes just going for a walk, going for some exercise, or going out with friends can help you distance yourself from the problem.

For me, this will be hard since my chest is part of me, but if I focus on doing leg exercises, reading, getting out in nature, and spending time with family, I can distance myself from my injury and get back on the path to success.

Get Past This Setback and Get on the Path to Success

Getting past a setback and getting back on the path to success might take a few days or weeks, but you can do it.

I’m upset with my injury right now, but I know if I rest for a few days, I can get back to full strength.

One benefit will be having more time to rest my entire body and give me more time to write, catch up on other tasks, and be with family.

There’s always pros and cons to every situation, and with any setback, being able to take a break, look at the bright side, and move on will be most beneficial.

Hopefully you can get past your setback and get back on the path to achieving your goals.
